-------------------------------------------------- Pre-Control Detailed Installation and Upgrade Instructions 2009 -------------------------------------------------- (C) Copyright TQS Associates, Inc. -------- Contents -------- System Requirements Setup on Standalone Machine (Single-User setup) Setup on a Network (Multi-User setup) Upgrading a previous version of Pre-Control on a standalone Machine or Network ------------------------------------------------ System Requirements ------------------------------------------------ Operating Systems: Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7 CD ROM Drive 100 MB RAM minimum (500 MB or more recommended) 60 MB hard drive space 500 MB free hard drive space recommended ------------------------------------------------ Setup on Standalone Machine (Single-User setup) ------------------------------------------------ 1. Close any applications which may be running before beginning installation. 2. Launch the Pre-Control setup program, either from the CDROM menu (if you have a Demo CD) or from the self- extracting zip file (if the Pre-Control demo was downloaded from our website). 3. A welcome message will appear. Choose Next, and then click the box to accept the license agreement and choose Next again. 4. Choose Next to install Pre-Control in the default folder - on the C drive (strongly recommended). The install location may be changed, but must be on the local PC drive (most likely the C drive). Do NOT choose a server location - even if you plan to store part files on the server. For some multi-user setups the install location must be known - you may want to write down this path (refer to Setup on a Network/Multi-user setup below). If the 'space required' is not reported and you wish to see it, then click the Next button and then the Back button to update it. 5. At the next screen click the Install button to begin installation. It may take a minute (or a few minutes), but allow the installation to work without intervention. Installation progress will be shown. 6. Setup will signal you when installed successfully. Then click Finish. To start using Pre-Control, choose start, then programs, then Pre-Control, and then the Pre-Control 1.3 icon, or click the Pre-control 1.3 shortcut on the desktop. The User's Guide can be accessed from the main switchboard or help menu after starting Pre-Control. -------------------------------------------- Setup on a Network (Multi-User setup) -------------------------------------------- 1. Follow the instructions under 'Setup on Standalone Machine' for each PC that must be able to open part files. DO NOT CHOOSE A SERVER AS THE INSTALLATION FOLDER - THIS PROGRAM MUST BE INSTALLED ON EACH LOCAL HARD DRIVE. WE STRONGLY SUGGEST ACCEPTING THE DEFAULT INSTALL LOCATION. 2. Ensure that each PC (that is to have access to a shared part file) has FULL network permissions for the shared folder containing the data (or for the folders that will contain the part files that will later be created), including read, write, and even delete permission. (Security restrictions can be set within Pre-Control application - reference the User's guide, which is available within the Pre-Control Application.) 3. Pre-Control, by default, will allow any PC with this program installed to open a part file created by another PC with this program installed. If security is not required, installation is complete - proceed to #5. 4. If only one copy of Pre-Control is being used or if security can be managed from each individual PC, instead of from a central PC, then installation is complete - security can be managed per the User's Guide without any further changes - proceed to #5. If security must be managed for multiple PC's (each with Pre-Control installed) from a central location or PC, then proceed as follows - We strongly suggest using an IT professional, or someone familiar with the Windows registry, for performing the following steps: -Ensure Pre-Control is shutdown -Move the file 'system.mdw' from Pre-Control's install location to a shared folder or server location. Note the new system.mdw path. The system.mdw file need only be copied from the first PC (to the server/shared folder) – the system.mdw file on other PC’s may be deleted. -Optional suggestion: Backup the Windows registry (as a precaution only), especially if at all unsure of working in the registry. -Locate the following registry entries, one at a time: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/TQS Associates/Pre-Control/Cmdline HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/TQS Associates/Pre-Control/Jet/4.0/ Engines/SystemDB -Both the 'Cmdline' and 'systemDB' registry entries above contain a pointer (full path) to system.mdw. Without changing any spaces, slashes, punctuation or any other parts of this entry, carefully change the path for both Cmdline and systemDB to point to the new system.mdw path (in shared location). -The above two registry changes must be made on each PC containing Pre-Control, ensuring all point to the same system.mdw file. -Make sure all PC's have read and write access to the server folder where system.mdw was placed. (because passwords, accounts, etc. are all stored there) -After complete, an administrator can enable security, create accounts, delete accounts, etc. - all from a single PC. 5. To start using Pre-Control, choose start, then programs, then Pre-Control, and then the Pre-Control 1.3 icon, or click the Pre-control 1.3 shortcut on the desktop. Remember, the User's Guide can be accessed from the main switchboard or help menu after starting Pre-Control. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Upgrading a previous version of Pre-Control on a standalone Machine or Network ---------------------------------------------------------------- Part files created with previous versions of Pre-Control can be read and used with this new revision. 1. CAUTION: Before upgrading, ensure that any part files that must be kept are safely backed up (somewhere other than the pre-control installation folder). 2. If user accounts/passwords and permission levels must also be maintained throughout the upgrade, then in addition to part files, back up the system.mdw file in use by the current revision of Pre-Control. To locate the system.mdw in use, highlight the Pre-Control 1.2 icon, right click, and choose properties. Then, arrow through the target until you see the path to system.mdw (this will only be a small portion of the entire target). If the default target line is in use, then the system.mdw file is in the folder 'c:\program files\pre-control'. Again, backup some place other than the pre-control installation folder. 3. Once part files and the system.mdw file (containing security information) are backed-up as necessary, the current revision of Pre-Control must be uninstalled. Uninstall Pre-Control from the control panel, or from the start menu by choosing run and typing: 'C:\Program Files\Pre-Control\setup\setup.exe' The setup program will begin either way. Then choose 'remove all'. The program will be completely removed. The PC may need to shut down and restart. When finished, the previous version of Pre-Control will have been removed, and the new version can be installed. 4. Install the new version of Pre-Control by following the instructions above, under 'Setup on Standalone Machine', or under 'Setup on a Network (multi-user setup)'. 5. If previous security settings must be restored, then place your backed-up copy of system.mdw either in the Pre-Control install location, or on the server/shared folder-if a centrally managed security system is being used (refer to step 4 under 'Setup on a Network/Multi-User setup' above). Just replace the existing copy of system.mdw (which is the new default copy just installed by the setup program). 6. If Pre-Control was previously installed on several PC's, then repeat steps 3 and 4 for each additional PC. If using a centrally managed security system, follow step 4 under 'Setup on a Network/Multi-User setup' for each PC after completing steps 3 and 4.
